The Consumer Product Safety Commission has finalized a ban on small, high-powered magnetic balls and cubes after documenting over 2,400 child injuries requiring emergency medical treatment since 2020.
Why They're Dangerous
When swallowed (which children frequently do), these powerful magnets attract each other through intestinal walls, causing perforations, blockages, sepsis, and death. Surgery is almost always required, and the injuries can be fatal if not treated promptly.
Products Banned
- All small (fits in cylinder test) rare-earth magnets marketed as desk toys, stress relievers, or building sets
- Brands affected: BuckyBalls, Zen Magnets, Speks, and dozens of Amazon-sold brands
- Magnets must be too large to swallow or too weak to cause intestinal damage
Warning Signs in Children
Symptoms of magnet ingestion mimic stomach flu: abdominal pain, vomiting, and fever. If you suspect your child swallowed magnets, go to the ER immediately — do NOT wait. X-rays can confirm the presence of magnets.
Parents should remove these products from homes where children under 14 have access. No child-safe version exists.
