The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the recall of approximately 2 million portable phone chargers sold under the brand name PowerBoost due to fire and burn hazards. The products were sold at Dollar General, Five Below, and Amazon between 2024 and 2026.
The lithium-ion battery cells in the recalled chargers can overheat during charging, potentially causing the device to catch fire or explode. CPSC has received 89 reports of incidents, including 12 reports of property damage and 5 reports of burn injuries.
Affected models include the PowerBoost 10000, PowerBoost 20000, and PowerBoost Solar, identifiable by model numbers PB-100 through PB-300 printed on the back of each unit. Consumers should immediately stop using the products and contact the company for a full refund.
The recall highlights ongoing safety concerns with low-cost lithium-ion battery products imported from overseas. CPSC Commissioner Robert Chen noted that the agency has seen a 40% increase in portable charger-related incidents over the past two years.
Amazon has removed the products from its marketplace and is notifying customers who purchased the items. Dollar General and Five Below have pulled remaining inventory from store shelves.
