Ford Motor Company has issued a safety recall for approximately 300,000 F-150 pickup trucks from the 2024-2026 model years due to a defective tailgate latch that could allow the tailgate to open unexpectedly while driving, potentially causing cargo to fall into the roadway.

The defect involves a corrosion-prone latch mechanism that can fail in humid conditions. Ford has received 156 warranty claims and 23 reports of tailgates opening unexpectedly, including one incident that caused a multi-vehicle accident on a highway.

The fix requires replacing the tailgate latch assembly with an updated corrosion-resistant version. Ford estimates the repair takes approximately one hour and will be performed at no cost to owners. Dealers have been supplied with replacement parts ahead of the official recall notice.

Pending the repair, Ford advises owners to visually inspect their tailgate latch before each drive and to avoid hauling heavy items. The company has also released a temporary fix that involves applying a water-displacing lubricant to the latch mechanism.

The recall adds to a challenging year for F-150 quality, following a smaller recall in February related to the truck's rearview camera system. Ford says it is investing in improved quality control processes.
