A major orthopedic device manufacturer has recalled a hip implant system after data showed failure rates significantly higher than industry standards, affecting an estimated 100,000 patients worldwide.

The Problem

The metal-on-metal hip implant has a revision rate of 12% at 10 years — more than double the acceptable threshold of 5%. Failures include metallosis (metal debris causing tissue damage), implant loosening, and chronic pain.

What Patients Should Do

Contact your orthopedic surgeon for imaging evaluation. Blood tests for cobalt and chromium levels can detect metallosis early. Many patients with elevated metal levels will need revision surgery.

Affected patients may be eligible for compensation through the manufacturer's patient support program or through legal action. Several law firms have already filed class-action suits.
