Hyundai has issued a recall for approximately 250,000 Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 electric vehicles due to a battery cell manufacturing defect that could lead to thermal runaway and fire.
The Issue
A manufacturing defect at a battery cell supplier (SK On) may cause internal short circuits in rare conditions. Hyundai has identified 3 confirmed fire incidents linked to the defect — all occurred during DC fast charging.
Affected Vehicles
- 2022-2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 (all trims)
- 2023-2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6 (all trims)
- Vehicles with SK On battery cells (VIN check at hyundaiusa.com/recalls)
Interim Guidance
Until the software update is applied, Hyundai recommends limiting DC fast charging to 80% state of charge and avoiding charging in enclosed spaces. Dealers will install a battery monitoring software update and inspect cells — a process taking 2-3 hours.
Owners will receive notification letters. Appointments can be scheduled at any Hyundai dealer. The repair is free of charge.
