IKEA Issues Major Glass Product Recall
IKEA has announced a recall of approximately 500,000 glass kitchen products sold in the United States after receiving reports of the glass spontaneously shattering during normal use. The recall, issued in coordination with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, covers glass food storage containers, baking dishes, and glass cooktop covers that pose a risk of laceration injuries.
At least 23 injury reports have been filed, including cases requiring medical attention for glass fragment wounds. IKEA is urging customers to stop using the affected products immediately.
Affected Products
The recall covers three product lines sold at IKEA stores and online between January 2023 and March 2026:
- IKEA 365+ Glass Food Containers (round, 14oz and 20oz) — article numbers 503.591.96 and 103.591.97
- MIXTUR Oven/Serving Dish (clear glass, rectangular) — article numbers 800.587.62 and 601.016.51
- VARDAGEN Glass Cooktop Cover — article number 504.128.33
Article numbers are printed on a label on the bottom of each product or on the original packaging. Products sold outside these date ranges are not affected.
What Is the Hazard?
The affected glass products can shatter unexpectedly during normal use, including while being heated in an oven, stored in a freezer, or simply sitting on a countertop. The shattering can send sharp glass fragments across a wide area, posing serious laceration risks.
Reports indicate the issue is related to thermal stress inconsistencies in the tempered glass manufacturing process. While tempered glass is designed to break into small, relatively safe pieces, the affected products have been found to produce larger, sharper fragments that can cause deep cuts.
We take product safety very seriously and are working closely with the CPSC to ensure all affected products are returned. Customers should stop using these products immediately, even if they have not experienced any issues. — IKEA US spokesperson
