IKEA has recalled 1.5 million MALM and KULLEN dressers sold in the US after receiving 8 new reports of furniture tip-overs involving children, including 2 serious injuries requiring hospitalization.
Ongoing Problem
This marks the third major IKEA dresser recall in a decade. Despite included wall-mounting hardware, the CPSC found that only 20% of customers actually anchor the furniture to walls.
New Approach
IKEA will offer free in-home installation of wall anchors or full refunds. The company is also redesigning all dressers to meet a new stability standard that prevents tip-over even when unanchored.
