Philips has issued a second major recall of its CPAP and BiPAP machines after new testing revealed that replacement foam installed during the first recall also degrades into potentially cancer-causing particles.
Scope
The recall affects 3.5 million devices worldwide, including machines that were previously "repaired" under the 2021 recall. Patients are advised to stop using affected devices and contact their doctors for alternatives.
Legal Fallout
Philips already faces $5 billion in lawsuits from the first recall. The second recall is expected to double legal exposure and has triggered calls for criminal prosecution of company executives.
