Toyota Motor Corporation has announced a recall of approximately 850,000 vehicles in the United States due to a software glitch in the electronic brake force distribution system. The recall covers 2024-2026 model year RAV4, Camry, and Highlander vehicles.

The defect can cause the brake system to temporarily reduce braking force during low-speed maneuvers, particularly when transitioning from highway driving to stop-and-go traffic. Toyota has received 47 complaints and reports of 3 minor accidents related to the issue.

The fix involves a software update that can be performed at dealerships in approximately 30 minutes. Toyota is also offering mobile service for customers who cannot easily visit a dealership. Owners will begin receiving notification letters by May 1.

The recall is one of the largest software-related automotive recalls in 2026, highlighting the growing complexity of vehicle electronic systems. Modern vehicles contain over 100 million lines of code, making software defects increasingly common.

NHTSA is monitoring the recall and has not issued a separate investigation. Toyota says it identified the issue through its internal quality monitoring system before any serious injuries occurred.
