Target has voluntarily removed a popular children's magnetic building set from its shelves and online store after receiving reports that small high-powered magnets can detach from the plastic tile components, creating a serious ingestion hazard for young children. The product, sold under the MagnaCreators brand, was marketed for children ages 3 and up and priced at $39.99.
The retailer says it received five reports of magnets separating from the tiles, including two incidents where toddlers placed loose magnets in their mouths. No injuries requiring medical treatment have been reported, but pediatric safety experts warn that swallowed high-powered magnets can attract through intestinal walls, causing perforations, blockages, and potentially life-threatening injuries.
Target is offering full refunds to customers who return the product to any store location. The CPSC is working with the manufacturer to determine whether a formal recall is warranted. Parents who have purchased the MagnaCreators building set are advised to inspect all tiles for loose magnets and keep the product away from children until further notice.
