The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a safety alert regarding children's magnetic building tile sets sold by multiple manufacturers after a sharp increase in emergency room visits related to magnet ingestion. CPSC data shows 34 reported incidents in the first quarter of 2026 alone, compared to 41 for all of 2025, with several cases requiring surgical intervention to remove magnets from children's digestive tracts.
The agency identified six specific brands of magnetic tiles that use small high-powered magnets that can detach from the plastic housing when tiles are cracked or broken during normal play. When multiple magnets are swallowed, they can attract through intestinal walls, causing perforations, blockages, and potentially life-threatening internal injuries.
CPSC is working with manufacturers to strengthen magnet retention standards and is considering a formal recall if voluntary corrective actions are deemed insufficient. Parents are advised to inspect magnetic tile sets regularly for cracks and discard any damaged pieces immediately.
